Tasting - Emeri de Bortoli Sparkling Shiraz

Name: Emeri de Bortoli Sparkling Shiraz
Variety: Shiraz
Region: South East
Country: Australia
Year: N/A
Price: $9.95

Vintage Cellar Review: A relatively light, fresh style of sparkling Shiraz, with berries and hints of chocolate picking up just a touch of sweet vanilla on the finish.

My Review: A nice, light sparkling red. Berry nose, fresh and fruity smell. Subtly sweet, I could catch the vanilla in the taste adding more to the flavor. The mid-palate is my favorite part; the wine becomes smooth once the initial effervescence fades. Not bad, but I'd probably like it a little sweeter!

I tried this wine on its own without food.

Tasting - Tres Ojos Garnacha

Name: Tres Ojos Garnacha
Variety: 100% Grenache
Region: Calatayud
Country: Spain
Year: 2011
Price: $6.95

Vintage Cellar Review: This wine has a brick red color with a bouquet of red raspberries, spice, and white pepper. The palate is incredibly concentrated and rich. The modern styles of Garnacha in Spain are continuously being perceived worldwide as wines of extraordinarily good quality. This wine is fruity, juicy and shows a great depth, ripe tannins, length but yet with wonderful elegance and lightness. Enjoy with sausages, roasted meats, aged cheeses etc.

My Review: Dark maroon color, berry bouquet. This wine also had kind of a burning leaves smell: outdoorsy and smokey. There was a strong rush of pepper in the taste that stayed in the back of the throat a little. There was also a little fruit taste, not my favorite wine but complex and good for those who like a little more tannin flavor.

I tried this wine on its own without food.

Tasting - Montebuena

Name: Montebuena
Variety: 100% Tempranillo
Region: Rioja
Country: Spain
Year: 2010
Price: $8.95

Vintage Cellar Review: Ripe cherry and blackcurrant on the nose and in the mouth. Pliant and seamless in texture, with good heft and back-end energy. Finishes smooth and sweet, with fine-grained tannins providing shape and grip. Still on the young side but this wine drinks very well with an hour or so of decanting; it's an excellent value for Rioja.

My Review: Very pretty, dark red color. There were cherry, raspberry, cranberry, and other berry flavors strongly in the nose. Reminded me of the smell of Christmas dinner and dessert. Had some good spices jumping on the tongue. Smooth and smokey feel to it, very nice!

I tried this wine on its own without food.

Tasting - Sainte Victoire Cotes de Provence

Name: Sainte Victoire Cotes de Provence
Variety: 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 20% Cinsault
Region: Provence
Country: France
Year: 2011
Price: $8.95

Vintage Cellar Review: Bright salmon pink; typical of the fresh but warm provence style. Refined and complex on the nose, with summer fruit and floral notes. Dry and crisp, with a delicate flavor and full texture.

My Review: Clear, peachy-pink color. Fruity and flowery nose; a complex bouquet. Pretty dry for a white, but has a good kick to it. Well rounded, very fresh and light, not bad!

I tried this wine on its own without food.

Tasting - Canyon Road Chardonnay

Name: Canyon Road Chardonnay
Variety: 100% Chardonnay
Region: California
Country: United States
Year: 2011
Price: $6.95

Vintage Cellar Review: Medium-bodied wine with notes of crisp apple and ripe citrus fruit with a hint of cinnamon spice. Delicious complement to grilled chicken, lighter pasta dishes or mild cheeses.

My Review: A very light almost clear color. The bouquet was full of apple and fruit with some citrus flavors. The nose also felt a little tingly and oaky. I got a taste of pear and apple. Not an acidic Chardonnay, but a nice tang and very smooth. I liked it!

I tried this wine on its own without food.

Tasting - Potluck Sweet Malbec

Name: Potluck Sweet Malbec
Variety: Malbec
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2010
Price: $7.95

Vintage Cellar ReviewDeep red brilliant with violet hints. Complex, fruity, and predominant red fruits. Easy to drink, round with persistent sweetness, very well balanced with sweet tannins.

My Review: Nice and fruity, cherry and strawberry in the nose. Smelled like candy - reminded me of twizzlers, one of my favorite candies. I could taste the tannins, which was odd for a lightly sweet wine. Had a tad bit of spice in the taste with a nice red berry flavor. I think I would like this wine with food better, since it isn't too sweet but sweeter than most.

I tasted this wine on its own without food.

Tasting - Domaine de Grange de Payan

Name: Domaine de Grange de Payan
Variety: Grenache
Region: Côtes du Rhône
Country: France
Year: 2011
Price: $8.95

Vintage Cellar ReviewIntensely spicy and precise, with lively red berry flavors and a hint of black pepper. The Grenache,  hich makes up the majority of the wine, is deeper and more powerful, offering cherry and black raspberry qualities lifted by zesty minerality.

My Review: Did not enjoy this Grenache as much as the one from Spain, but I can see why some do. The nose included hints of cherry and pepper, with a little vanilla at the end which I liked. A dry wine with a good amount of spice and pepper in the taste, so it wasn't my style.

I tried this wine on its own without food.

Tasting - Tinto Figaro

Name: Tinto Figaro
Variety: 100% Grenache
Region: Calatayud
Country: Spain
Year: 2009
Price: $6.95

Vintage Cellar ReviewFigaro is 100% Garnacha, made from a selection of the best grapes grown in the oldest vineyards. While not truly an "oaked wine", a short stay in oak barrels provides a nice spicy flavor boost. Bright violet. Dark berry and cherry aromas show a jammy aspect. Supple and gently sweet, with good lift to its black raspberry and boysenberry flavors. Smooth and broad on the finish, leaving behind a hint of spiciness. Extremely easy to drink and an excellent value.

My Review: Nice color with a black fruit nose. Black cherry and berry bouquet, somewhat smokey as well. I got a sense of the raspberry flavors while trying the wine. Spicy taste, but a spice I enjoyed. A little dry, but it was good.

I tried this wine without food.

Tasting - Maipe Malbec Rose

Name: Maipe Malbec Rose
Variety: 100% Malbec
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2011
Price: $7.95

Vintage Cellar ReviewIntense pink color with violet hints. Fresh red fruit bouquet, strawberry and cherry flavors, balanced acidity, dry and lingering finish. Excellent with tuna or green salad, pasta, spicy Asian dishes.

My Review: Very close color to red wines. Had a nice fruit and flowery nose like strawberries and rose petals mixed together. I liked the fruit characteristics, there was a nice spice that jumped around on the tongue. Drier than most roses, but good!

I tasted this wine without food.

Tasting - Cortenova Pinot Grigio

Name: Cortenova Pinot Grigio
Variety: Pinot Grigio
Region: Veneto
Country: Italy
Year: 2012
Price: $7.95

Vintage Cellar ReviewBrilliant straw color with emerald reflections. Fresh and floral bouquet with a hint of pears, apricots and bananas. Fresh and inviting with bright fruit and an easy drinking style with a pleasing hint of almonds in the aftertaste. Pairs well with seafood dishes, risottos with scampi, spaghetti with clams, sole in white wine Perfect also as an aperitif.

My Review: Nice, sweet nose with a fruity apple bouquet. Smooth and sweet, hints of pear and light fruits. I got a pleasing aftertaste tasting sort of like licorice or mint. This would be a good wine to sip on with friends before a meal.

I tried this wine on its own.

Dinner - Zeppoli's (New World Wines)

Finally I have experienced, in detail, wine with food - the way it's meant to be! Every other Sunday, Zeppoli's Italian Restaurant in Blacksburg, VA has wine and food pairings for our class, so a friend and I went to try it out during their presentation of the 'big varietal' New World wines. It was a great way to learn how different wines were affected by food, and if I liked the change in taste of both the food and wine!

Inside Zeppoli's with all of the Wines!
The night started off great since all of the food we would soon be eating was presented buffet-style and was smelling delicious. The food consisted of great Italian dishes and hors d'oeuvres such as cheeses, olives (black AND green which is the best you can do in my eyes), a Mediterranean salad, delicious bread with spinach/artichoke dip, spaghetti and meatballs, more amazing toasted garlic-y bread, and ravioli.

My plate of food!
We tasted 9 different types of wines: 3 whites, 4 reds, and 2 dessert wines. We of course started with the whites, and I tried to stick to my appetizers (bread, cheese, salad) while drinking the white wines. When we came to the reds and desserts, I had my more substantial food and then finished with the cake provided alongside the dessert wines.

Torre di Luna Pinot Grigio

White Wines

The first white wine we tried was the Torre di Luna 2011 Pinot Grigio from Italy. This Pinot Grigio smelled very sweet with a flowery nose to it. I tried this wine while eating the olives, and I thought the saltiness made the wine good- maybe made it a little sweeter on the tongue. It was fruity, crisp, and refreshing, and it tasted good with cheese too!

Sierra Cruz Sauvignon Blanc pre-consumption
The next white we tried was the Sierra Cruz 2011 Sauvignon Blanc from Maule Valley, Chille. This wine smelled sweeter than it tasted, but it was still good. It had an outdoorsy nose and tasted pretty citrus-y. It was very smooth and light as well. I tried this with the Greek salad, which I think affected the taste some, maybe making it taste a little more like citrus than it would have without. I would say this wine paired well with the appetizers.

Hope Estates Chardonnay Label
The third and final white wine we tasted was Hope Estates 2009 Chardonnay from Hunter Valley, Australia. I thought this had the best smell of the three, it was sweet, fruity, and had a melon and apple fresh bouquet to it. It tasted pretty tart and citrus-y, which made it feel very refreshing. I tried this wine along side the spinach-artichoke dip, and I actually think this time the wine tasted a little better on its own without the taste of the dip lingering on the tongue. However, the dip tasted better with the taste of the wine added to it.

Red Wines

Me drinking (and blinking) the Coastal Vines Pinot Noir
The first red was Coastal Vines 2010 Pinot Noir from Sonoma County in California. This was a good start to the reds; it was smooth and fresh. The nose was very nice, it had a good cherry scent. I tried this first before eating anything, and then after I tasted it along with the spaghetti and meatballs. It was a whole lot spicier with the pasta than on its own, which unfortunately wasn't the most pleasant taste for me. However, if you like spice, this is great alongside pasta!
Kenwood Merlot Label

Next was the Kenwood 2010 "Yulupa" Merlot from California. This Merlot-Petit Verdot blend was very good. The nose was fruity with a berry, cherry, raspberry scent. The finish of the nose had a nice licorice smell, which added to its complexity. I tasted this with crackers seeing as I was starting over on my second serving of food. I thought it tasted very good, I could taste the tannins and the nice spicy finish. I thought the crackers gave it a nice flavor addition, and the wine made the crackers taste better as well.

Gen 5 Cabernet Sauvignon

The next red was the Gen 5 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon from Lodi California. It smelled fruity and good, like plum and berries. I tasted this with the ravioli, which I think made it taste better than it would have without. It was very heavy and I think the food lightened it up a bit which made it feel better to me. The mid-palate was pretty spicy and the wine was a little too dry for my taste. I think it was okay; this is the wine I felt changed the most with food and without the food I don't know if I would have liked it as much.

My friend and I trying the Oxford Landing Shiraz

The final red we tried was the 2011 Oxford Landing Shiraz from South Australia. The nose was fruity and sweet with cherries, berries, and a little celery blended together. It tasted peppery and dry, but good with hints of raspberry flavors. I think this was my favorite red wine so far in this class. The ravioli I had with it made it taste spicier, but I didn't mind so much - it added a nice kick!

And finally we come to my favorite...

Dessert and Dessert Wines

Chocolate and Vanilla Cake
For dessert, we tasted two sweet and bubbly wines to go with the delicious chocolate and vanilla cake that was offered.

Famiglia Pasqua Moscato
The first dessert wine presented was the Famiglia Pasqua 2011 Moscato d'Asti from Piedmont Italy. This was a very delicious wine, it was sweet, bubbly, and fruity! There really wasn't a strong smell, but maybe that was because I rushed to taste it! It tasted a lot like sparking fruit punch, sweet but not overwhelmingly so. I tried this Moscato with both the chocolate and vanilla cake, and found it tasted better with the vanilla. The wine paired well with both, however; the cake added to the flavors of the wine and vice versa. Very good wine with or without dessert!

A glass of the "Rosa Regale"

The last wine of the night was the Banfi 2010 "Rosa Regale" Brachetto d'Acqui of Italy. It smelled wonderful, not too strong, but a sweet strawberry and vanilla nose. It had a nice effervescence, refreshing, sweet but not super sweet. This sparkling red tasted good with both the chocolate and vanilla cake, and the flavors mixed well to give a really nice dessert experience!

Overall I feel like I learned a lot from this dinner. I had never tried so many different wines with different food to see how they mixed. The white wines did not seem to be too drastically different with food, so I feel comfortable drinking them before or while I eat. I think the red wines did taste spicier with food, but I enjoy the food and wine more when together. Now I know red wines are meant with food and I think I will look into wine and food pairings more often so that I can get the most out of the flavors! I can't wait to do more dinners and taste more wines!

Tasting - Rex-Goliath Red Zinfandel

Name: Rex-Goliath Red Zinfandel
Variety: Red Zinfandel
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: N/A
Price: $5.99

Winery Review: The old-vine fruit from Lodi provides an abundance of ripe blackberry and cherry flavors. The Central Coast provides earty, spicy, coffee/mocha notes. The "dry farmed" fruit from the Sierra Foothills provides the depth and complexity that really rounds out the flavor profile.

My Review: This wine smells very good; hints of berries and cherries and sweet smells in the nose. It was somewhat dry, but still tasted good to me. The aftertaste reminded me of cherries as well. I liked it!

A graceful, flavorful wine to enjoy immediately, accompanying chicken dishes, red meats, game, and mildly seasoned pastas.

My Review: This wine smells good and fruity like fresh strawberries. It tastes a lot like berries as well, not too dry. A very refreshing wine that I enjoyed!

Winery Review: A blend of the North Coast's finest varieties, Crush Red Blend pulls you in with a smoky berry note and then jumps up with a raspberry jam. Around the dinner table or out on the patio, it's a wine you're going to want to share with your favorite people.

My Review: I've never had a wine like this before, but it was pretty good. It smells like cherry, tastes a little dry with some spice on the finish. Not my favorite wine but I'd have it again.

Tasting - Sterling Vintner's Collection Chardonnay

Name: Sterling Vintner's Collection Chardonnay
Variety: Chardonnay
Region: Central Coast
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Price: $10.00

Winery Review: Beautiful balance characterizes our Sterling Vintner's Collection Chardonnay. Tropical fruit, guava and peach are supported by crisp acidity, and aging in oak barrels rounds out the flavors by contributing notes of caramel and spice.

My Review: To me, this Chardonnay smelled like ripe grape and apple and very sweet. It tasted good; citrusy, sweet, and the finish strangely to me tasted a little like olives. I liked it and would have it again!
